Art it up! Collage Papers 101

How to make an awesome collage you will love

Have you always wanted to create an awesome collage, but always seem to feel a bit lost when it comes to choosing the paper, the newsprint, the ribbons and the glitter?

If so, here are some steps you can follow to create your very first awesome collage, as well as some tips you can use so that the next time you make one it is easy for you.

Start by choosing your materials — When it comes to making an awesome collage, you want to be sure all the materials you choose match somewhat. That is why you should spend more time doing this as anything else, as it is the basis of your entire finished piece.

Look for construction paper, newsprint, handmade paper, photographs, ribbon, stickers, magazine cut-outs and even foil. Just be sure everything is on a similar color scheme so your finished piece is pleasing to the eye.

Prepare your materials — This usually means cutting or tearing your paper, photographs, magazine cut-outs etc. so they are ready to be pasted onto your collage.

The best way to do this is not to cut around everything, making it look uniform and neat, but instead to cut around some pieces while tearing around others. This will make your finished piece a much more awesome collage, as it really will look like a professional piece.

Create lettering — Your collage does not have to have lettering on it but, if you do want to add words, create your own out of a solid colored construction paper, foil, wallpaper scraps, magazine cut-outs, even foil.

Try to make every letter look interesting, and not just as if every letter is the same.

Decide on a design or a theme — Some artists create awesome collages out of scraps of paper and other materials by simply creating an abstract piece. Others create an actual picture out of similar material. What you decide to create is up to you.

Either way, though, you will end up with an awesome collage if you build it around a theme. Whether that theme is a color scheme, a story, an event or another idea that brings every piece of material in the collage together.

Should you add embellishments? — Many collage artists add glitter, sequins, ribbons, pearls, beads and many other types of embellishments to their work (btw, you can get awesome materials at collage papers australia)

Whether you decide to do that depends on your theme, the materials you have at hand and your own taste. Remember, though, if you do add embellishments, try to stick with what you already have laying around at home, as buying them from a craft store can become expensive.

Choose your collage background — Finally, choose your collage background.

That can be a sturdy cardstock, a piece of paper, a canvas or even part of a cardboard box if you do not have anything else. Remember too, you can always paint any surface you are planning on using before starting to collage.

Once your background is prepared and ready to have your collage pieces applied to it, you can get started. Have fun, and create the most awesome collage you can.
