Have you been running your website on a shared server for a long time? Have you been hearing that running a site on a dedicated server is the best way to go?
If so, and you have not as yet moved your website to a dedicated server, now may be the time to do so. Look at these things to check if your site needs a dedicated server of its own.
Is your site new? — If your site is new, you do not need to get a dedicated server to start out with. This is because it will usually take a few months at least before the traffic to your site is so much it is impacting the site’s performance and speed. When it does, you can upgrade to a dedicated server then.
Is your site getting slower? — It is possible to test the average speed of your website by using an online tool like Pingdom. This and other similar sites not only tells you how fast your site is loading, but also points out any problems it may currently be experiencing.
If one of these online tools tells you the site is too slow, chances are it is time for you to look at a dedicated server instead of the shared server you are using now.
How much of your servers’ resources are you using? — When you have your site on a shared server, you only have so many resources you can use. This is because other websites on the same server need to have access to some of the server’s resources as well.
Monitor the amount of resources you are using on a daily basis via your site’s CPanel. As soon as you begin to notice you are using a lot more resources and the amount keeps increasing, it is time to start looking at a dedicated server instead.
Do you need to have full control of the server? — If you have decided you need to get more RAM or a bigger CPU, or even a different operating system than the one currently being used by the server, you will have to have a dedicated server to be able to control all of these things. After all, there are other people on a shared server and their needs have to be taken into consideration as well. Lease a dedicated server, however, and you can pretty much do anything with it.
Is security an issue? — If you have decided you need to have control of the security of your website, then you will need to move to a dedicated server.
This is due to security on a shared server not being the best especially as, if one of the other sites on the shared server is hacked, this leaves your site open to being hacked as well.
With a dedicated server, however, you can set the security parameters to be very high, and then be secure in the knowledge that no other site can impact the security of yours.
